ANITA THE ANTI-SKIN BLEACHING ACTIVIST
"Hi my name is Anita and I am a dermatologist who works in local communities to raise awareness about the harmful effects of skin lightening agents and to change the perception of black skin."
Dr Anita Benson is a Dermatology Senior Resident and Public Health Specialist who has worked in both the public and private sector. She has affected the lives of hundreds of people in local communities by educating them on the adverse effects of skin lightening and offering treatment for various skin diseases while changing the perception they have towards darker skin. Research shows that about 77% of Nigerians are using skin lightening agents and less than a tenth of them are aware of the adverse effects of skin lightening. She started the 1000beautiful_black_women campaign on Instagram to celebrate and empower melanin and change the popular perception that lighter skin is more beautiful but most importantly, to raise awareness via social media about the adverse effects of skin lightening.
This Public Health Dermatologist is passionate about skin health and dreams of a world where people are not treated differently because of the colour of their skin and are confident about the skin they were born with regardless of its colour, tone or texture. Her 1000 beautiful women campaign is especially targeted at adolescents because studies have shown that most people become aware of the negative perception towards darker skin tones at this age and consequently begin to experiment with skin lightening agents.
Please join the cause and sign her petition to ban the sale of harmful skin lightening agents over the counter.
She has a masters in public health from the University of Sheffield and her work also includes care for HIV/TB patients in low-resource settings, health education and medical outreaches, medical tourism, preventive medicine, medical and pharmaceutical research as well as working as a Health Adviser on research and projects. She is a nationally acclaimed blogger and writer who won 5 awards in the 2011 Nigerian Blog awards and has also worked as a contributor for Cosmopolitan Magazine. Her blog 'Memoirs of a woman with Chutzpah' covers women issues, gender, sexuality, health and well-being in a fun, personal way. She also engages in mentoring and personal development trainings for adolescent girls, women and professionals as well as public speaking. She is a board member of an NGO for orphans in South Africa.
She lives in Edo state, Nigeria and you can reach her on +2348036640685, dranitabenson@gmail.com, Linkedin, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
